planning web-based tutorials This series of web-based
tutorials aims to introduce those seeking to widen their
understanding of planning and designing residential
environments to a broad range of the environmental and
social issues, which need to be considered when drawing up
proposals for new or renovated housing; they deal with the
environmental settings for daily life. The tutorials have been
designed for use by: The
views expressed here are those of the author. They have
derived from working as a practitioner in the layout and
design of housing areas for over 10 years, as well as 20
years' experience of teaching students on both undergraduate
and postgraduate professional planning and design courses.
Helping students work through the very complex issues
involved in the site planning and design process helped to
clarify the problems that need to be addressed - the author
would like to thank all the ex-students of Landscape Design
at the University of Sheffield in particular, for their
help. If you
have any ideas about information that you would like to see
added, for instance: Social

environments (the space between the buildings) in our cities
and towns iii) access relevant
bibliographies which are provided with each tutorial. The
references included here are not intended to be exhaustive -
the student will still need to undertake a full library
